About Spell Steps

A free, family-friendly platform to help children build spelling confidence one word at a time.

Spell Steps is a free, family-friendly platform built to help children build spelling confidence one word at a time. We organize spelling words by grade level from kindergarten through fifth grade and by specific phonics skills, with heart words, common words, and challenge words for extra practice. Separate reading word lists let you track sight-word and phonics fluency alongside spelling. Whether your child is just beginning to recognize letter sounds or working on multisyllable challenge words, Spell Steps provides clear, structured word lists that grow with them.

What makes Spell Steps different is its focus on practical, at-home practice. Each word can be tapped to hear its pronunciation. Spelling words can be marked Not Started, Practicing, or Mastered, and reading words can be tracked as Needs Practice or Good. Build your own custom spelling lists from weekly test words or tricky spellings, or download printable lists for screen-free practice in the car, at bedtime, or anywhere. A progress dashboard shows exactly what your child has mastered and what still needs attention, and a practice plan highlights what to work on next.

Spell Steps is designed for real families. Parents can add multiple children, each with their own profile and progress tracking, and switch between them anytime. Gentle milestone badges and streaks celebrate progress without pressure or distractions — just clean, organized word lists and straightforward progress tools. Whether you are supplementing classroom instruction, supporting a struggling speller, doing summer review, or guiding a homeschool curriculum, Spell Steps gives you the structure you need without anything extra.

We built Spell Steps because we believe every child deserves access to quality spelling resources, and every parent deserves tools that are easy to use and actually helpful. The platform is free to use. It was created by a small team who care deeply about early literacy and want to make a difference in how families practice spelling at home. We are constantly adding new words, improving the experience, and listening to feedback from the families who use Spell Steps every day.
